The Complexities of Denim (2018) thrift store denim, thread, ventilator mask // Commission for the University of Iowa Museum of Art and Hello Flyover. After researching the human & environmental costs of denim, I created a wearable using a material palette from the thrift store of intentional factory rips & surface wear sourced from mainly China & Southeast Asia. The design is of a shared burden. Because on any given day, it is estimated that half the world’s population is wearing jeans. What is the responsibility of the designer & consumer in protecting the planet? The piece is informed by work by Lewis Wickes Hine in the UIMA collection specifically Doffer Girl in New England Mill (1908)
